What I've Been Doing Lately

The top picture is of new wallpaper in our laundry room -- yes, I got a little wild and decided to throw some up in this tiny room. I found the pattern while looking for something else and couldn't get it out of my mind. I suppose my house is like everyone else's and your socks get tired of living together and divorce. And for the life of you you can't figure out where they went!
The second picture is of our front room when you walk into the front door. The wallpaper just barely went up and next week we get carpet. YAY! When my wallpaper guy found out that it's taken two years to do a little bit of remodeling, he said, "And you're still married?" I couldn't answer that. It's been a little rough.
The third picture is of my biggest project yet. A neighbor walked in and said, "Oh, you have a wall of fame!" I used to have miscellaneous framed pictures up on this wall, but when I found these frames I loved the "orderliness" of them all. Each child has their own display. I had everything up a month ago, but the white mats were driving me crazy. So I spent all day yesterday taking every single picture back out. I spray painted them with a textured spray paint that looks like brown sand, then got everything hung up by 10pm last night. My experience with spray paint has been very minimal and I only started with one can ---- it took me an entire can for one mat! So, yes, back and forth to Home Depot. Gotta love it. The only thing left for this wall is to put up one of those vinyl lettering sayings at the top. I haven't ordered it yet, but am excited to get it up. It's going to say, "You're nothing short of our everything."

Two More Dance Pictures

This is Adam and Megan at Junior Prom and the Valentine's Dance. NO -- they are not an item. I wish this girl didn't even exist because of the pain she caused Adam, BUT maybe he needed to learn something. I'm just too protective ;]

Past Dances

Here are some past pictures from Adam's dances at school last year. Adam: This is me and Emily Davis, I'm still not quite sure how I got talked into this one, but there I am anyway. There won't be any "formal" dance pictures because this isn't a "formal" dance. Enjoy! I don't have the formal dance picture of this event, but he dressed with this cutie as "mimes". This one is from Adam's first girls-choice dance. He was asked by someone he didn't even know just days after his 16th birthday. She was a member of the volleyball team, and Adam knew several members. They all went together dressed in camouflage and had a great time. Adam: I had a heck of a time figuring out who asked me. Next is Adam and Stephanie on sentry duty.

Horseback Riding Lessons

These few pictures are of Erica riding Dream, the horse she practices on. She's been taking horseback riding lessons for about 2 years now. She is in her element when she's on the back of a horse. Last week she tried an English saddle for the first time and said that Dream behaved himself. She said it was very hard because there was nothing to hold onto, your knees just have to squeeze and you have to balance. This week she started weaving in and out of barrels trying to keep Dream at a trot. Her instructor has had nothing but high praise for her and her abilities with horses.

Jake started soccer a couple of weeks ago. Here's part of his team picture. Kyra reffed his game last night. I heard her telling him as they walked off the field, "Jacob, you talk as much on the field as you do off the field."

Jacob's reply was, "That's what I do best!"

He's playing defender mostly. In my day we called them fullbacks. He's very content with that and doesn't aspire to be a forward in the middle of chaos. He did get to play forward for a few minutes last night, so I'm happy he got some running around. His team is very good....they've never lost....so there's hardly any action down by the goal.

He's enjoying the 5th grade. The third day of school he came home "hating" his teacher and on the verge of tears because one of his teacher's rules was no singing on the bus. I asked him if they were on a bus today. He said No. I asked if they were going on a bus soon, and he said No. I said, "Oh, she's just talking about when you take field trips on the bus which is about twice a year." He said, Yes, and that he ALWAYS sings on the bus. We talked about his teacher being Grandma-aged and maybe she didn't like the noise. The very next day he came flying home and told me how much he LOVES his teacher. I asked Why? And he said that every Friday they get a FUN Friday, which means they do fun stuff after lunch like play games and watch movies. So....Fun Fridays win over No Singing on the Bus. Whew!!!

Kyra Halloween Recital_Part 1

This is a video clip of Kyra's first recital in the fall of 2007. The video was too long for this site, so I had to split it in two.

Listen to this one first! And then I picked it back up in Part 2.

Trek 2008

All that's missing is a pitchfork, huh? Adam and Kyra participated in a youth Pioneer Trek this past June, complete with authentic/look-alike clothing and handcarts. For four days, they role-played the handcart pioneers somewhere in the middle of Wyoming, covering I don't know how many miles, pulling handcarts laden with supplies -- I'll have to have Adam edit this obviously. They were each put into separate "families" with a Ma and a Pa. This enriching experience deepened their testimonies of the "faith of our fathers," and helped them sample a very small portion of what sacrifices the original handcart pioneers must have experienced. Actually, the more I write, the more it seems that their own voices would be more suited and appropriate to this post, so....stay tuned.

Summer Family Vacation

We took a family trip to Yosemite and Lake Tahoe the first part of July. We watched the fireworks over Lake Tahoe the night of the 4th, then drove on down to Yosemite the next day. I think it was a bit farther than we both thought. Actually, I didn't really know. When Bill and I were dating, his parents invited me to go with them to Yosemite, and that was my first and only time. I didn't remember the mountain passes and windy roads AT ALL. We wondered if we were ever going to get to where we wanted to go! We spent 2-1/2 days there and saw a lot of the country. We arrived from the east driving up over Tioga Pass. We spent some time at the top. We were inquiring about a simple hike to a scenic lake -- we are not experienced hikers, we are experienced couch potatoes! -- when the ranger suggested another way to the lake that was shorter, about a mile total, and more popular. I thought 'oh, good, I won't kill the kids the very first day'. Well, it turns out that the hike was STRAIGHT UP and over a mountain. You couldn't tell because the brush was pretty thick to begin with, but we weren't a quarter of the way there when my breathing started getting pretty heavy and my calf muscles kicked in. My 3 oldest children were setting a terrific pace like they were born to do this, and we had to call a halt for several 'rests' so Jacob and his parents could catch their breaths. It sure was beautiful, though. We made it and lived to tell thetale. We stopped at another beautiful lake along the way that had a white sandy beach, so we all got out and laid on the sand, played in the sand and cooled our feet down in the coldness. It felt WONDERFUL after the hike. I could have fallen asleep right then and there. We visited Tuolumne Meadows and a few more scenic stops, then spent the rest of the day getting down the mountain and finding our hotel in Mariposa. We could tell that the area was starting to get a little smoky from the fires. Not too bad -- just hazy.
The next day we went to the Mariposa Sequoia Grove and drove along the Glacier Point Road. Such beautiful places! The next morning we rented bikes and rode along the meadows and then rented 2 rafts and floated the river. It sounds idyllic, and it was except my family started getting sick! Kyra's stomach was too upset to ride the bikes, so she and I went to find some 7-Up while the others rode. She was still feeling sick when we got the rafts, but we didn't know what else to do. I guess I felt she could sit in a raft just as well as sit on the shore, so we went anyway. When her stomach finally got rid of whatever bug, she was feeling okay for a couple hours then started feeling yucky again and she didn't eat for almost 48 hours. Whatever it was, it went right through all of us from that point forward at different times! And it was nasty!
I've heard of families going on vacation and everyone getting sick, and I guess we had our turn. BUT lucky for us, our accommodations at Lake Tahoe were free, so it wasn't like we had paid for passes to Disneyland or some other type of amusement and then felt too ill to go. At Lake Tahoe we just all "hung out." We were within walking distance to the beach, so whoever was feeling healthy enough went, and those that weren't just laid around all day. We were supposed to leave home on a Saturday, but Bill and I were still too weak, so we stayed another day lounging around. I could function, but I knew if I had to use my reflexes for any defensive driving, it wouldn't have been pretty. Plus, the night before we were to leave, Jacob got sick and was the sickest of the 6. Erica and I got off the luckiest as far as least amount of time in the bathroom and/or laying prostrate.
We knew it was going to be a very relaxed vacation at the lake, but we didn't think it would be THIS relaxed! We saw a lot of movies and I got a TON of cross-stitch done. I had brought some games from home for our nights' entertainment, but there were only 2 nights where everyone felt up to play. It was pretty pathetic! There was one day right after Yosemite where everyone felt okay and we were able to take a bike ride along a forest trail that sometimes peeked out to the beaches on Lake Tahoe. It was a beautiful, paved path. We even got to meander through a little historic site where they had old wealthy "cabins" right on the shore (Tallac?). It was a property built by some Gatsby-type family and I could just imagine them strolling along dressed to the nines. The butler had his own cottage as well as maids and cooks and guests. You can tour some of the homes, but we didn't go in. Just peeked in a few windows.
I came home very tired, but with some beautiful pictures. I don't think I've ever cleaned up after so many sick people in my life! I was constantly doing laundry and cleaning the carpet. I hope Heavenly Father is merciful and only lets this type of experience happen only once! But if not.....oh, well.
To see the photo album of this trip, look for the box labeled "Photo Albums" on the right hand side of the screen, and click on Yosemite-Tahoe trip. It should automatically take you to the Flickr site and start up a slideshow. It doesn't show titles or descriptions very well, so I'll have to keep working on a better system. I'm just thrilled I learned that much today -- linking a photo album and editing video files!

First Dance

Thanks to cousin Amy, this picture caught Erica dancing her first dance....at a YMCA horse camp she attended in August. If she thought closing her eyes was going to make the photographer go away....well, maybe I need to teach her a few more things. Erica spent a week up in a beautiful mountain setting with 30 other kids. She was a "wrangler" so that meant getting up at 6am every morning to feed the horses and toss hay bales. (By the way, the toss-hay-bales part landed her in the emergency room when she started having major abdominal pains the day after she returned home. Apparently her side muscles retaliated after 6 days and thought she needed "strains" to slow her down and give them a rest! So she was heavily medicated for 3 days until the muscle strains could calm down) She wrote in her journal or letters until 7:30am (flag raising) then they were off involved in various activities. The first half of the day involved horses, the latter half "other fun stuff." She fell in love with her counselors and other staff members of the camp. Once again she couldn't talk fast enough to tell me everything. She laughed a lot, which is a huge bonus. I reminded her to take pictures to remember her fun......and guess what? All the pictures were of horses! That is SO Erica. Forget the people.....let's just concentrate on the important things!

A New Job for Kyra

Kyra started a new job in August working for the city of Farmington. She's a referee for our local soccer league a couple nights a week, and then does chains for the football games every once in awhile. Her first day was truly a good experience: she was yelled at by both soccer coaches at the same time! One coach didn't bother telling her or the opposing coach that she had an addl player on the field, and the other coach just thought that Kyra should be noticing and counting players all the time. The coaches yelled at each other first, and then turned on Kyra. I have no idea why the coach "in the wrong" decided to turn on Kyra, but she did. Why they needed to be yelling when the game had obviously been stopped is beyond me. Did they think Kyra was deaf? I don't know. Anger management, people. Get a grip! This is local kids' soccer, no money involved. We're talking everyone-gets-a-trophy-at-the-end-of-the-season soccer. I'm glad I wasn't there.....my Mama bear instincts are pretty strong. Kyra is learning a lot about what NOT to do when she coaches her own kids' teams. Read more!

A New Frontier

I've been kicking around the idea of creating a blog for quite some time. I fought against it for months thinking it would be just "one more thing" on my plate. But, if you can believe this, I made it a matter of prayer and the exact same day I had 2 confirmations that what I wanted to do would be of some use and benefit. I don't know how. I dont' know why. I just know I could not ignore the affirmation. So here I am. I initially thought of this as a new "project" and a "new frontier to embark on," but in reality I've always written my thoughts and family's growth down in my private journals. So I'm not really doing anything new, I'm just making the leap of taking it public, sharing my family, my personal thoughts and testimony with family and friends, even though most of you over the years have always been recipients of family newsletters and digital photo albums. I already know I will not be a faithful, daily blogger like some sites. I would be on here for hours rambling and rambling!! I will just start with the premise that I will do the best I can when I have a burning desire to share something funny, serious or absolutely normal and mundane in the course of our family life. Here's to an old idea on a new frontier! Read more!
