Surprise, Surprise
Tonight as we were sitting around the kitchen table waiting for Jake to take that one last bite of sweet mashed potatoes, I had one of those crazy and wild impulses. They don't come very often, and more often than not they are squashed by my civility and manners. But not tonight. Adam was sitting across the table lengthwise from me. I scooped up a big spoonful of sweet potatoes and flung it at him! The kids were so shocked that no one spoke for a moment, and then there was a chorus of "Mom!"s. I didn't hit my target -- my spoon kind of went sideways -- but it's probably a good thing. Adam had a brand new white hoodie on and his shocked face was priceless. Actually, all their faces were priceless. For 5 seconds I had a feeling of reckless and wild abandonment. Pretty cool. Adam's reflexes were very tight and swift, not to mention Kyra's, who was sitting beside me and was almost in the pathway of the non-intended directional goop. It probably would have been more fun if someone else joined in the fun and an old-fashioned food fight ensued, but I've raised my kids to be a little too polite. I don't even think the option crossed their minds. I think we need to lighten up. What can I do next?

Aah, but who knows what seeds you have planted. I have a sneeky hunch you'll get ganged up on when you least expect it. When the food fights started in the cafeteria at school it got very quiet. Then you knew you better take cover under the table ASAP. So if they get grins on their faces and the conversation stops you better get your weapon out. :)
